New Zealand looks small next to Australia, and it is not. The drive from Auckland to Wellington is a full day. The South Island’s west coast has one road, and it closes when it rains hard. A plan that treats the country like Switzerland spends its best days in a car.

The seasons are inverted, and they are not what you expect. January is high summer and school holidays; the good lodges are full a year ahead. Autumn, March to May, is the quiet, golden season almost nobody from the north knows to book. Winter in the south is skiing and clear, cold days in Fiordland.

The best places don’t rank. The bakery worth a detour, the cellar door with no sign, the operator who runs one boat a day: none of them buy search results. You find them by living here and asking.

Our lived expertise is New Zealand, so we plan Australia as the other half of a longer journey. Sydney or Melbourne as the gateway and the first two nights on the ground. Tasmania for cool-climate food and a wilderness that pairs with the South Island rather than repeating it. The Reef when the season is right. For what we haven’t walked ourselves we work with people on the ground, and we tell you which parts those are.

We book the parts that carry a trip: flights, including the seat that matters on a 13-hour leg; hotels and lodges we would send our own families to; and cars and motorhomes (RVs) through partners whose vehicles are the ones in the photograph.

Activities and the harder-to-get experiences come as recommendations with your itinerary, from the private guide to the operator who runs one boat a day. We will book those for you as well, for a service fee agreed before anything is reserved.
